For best results, position mic as close to sound source as possible. Beyond three or four feet, the audio may start to sound distant. Also, try to aim the mic at the sound source, as sound from the side or rear will not be picked up well.

Let's face it: once you add a microphone and extension cable, no matter how light they can make a Boompole that can extend out 5 feet or more, it's tough for a person to hold it steady for any extended period of time and also avoid 'frame dipping,' which can even disturb a normally pleasant editor.

The only solution - especially for a 'talking-head' show, is this attachment which can not only hold the pole and mic, but fit into a light stand if no C-stand is available and free up a crew member for other responsibilities.

On long extended takes like with a talking head on an interview, a better solution to holding the boom pole is to use the boom pole stand, because by so doing, you can lock the boom pole and mic into a fixed position that doesn't require a crew member to control it.
